In late November, we were excited to welcome Betty Fekadu to the Moveable Feast team as our new staff accountant. Having a background working in nonprofit accounting, she brings a wealth of knowledge to Moveable Feast’s finance department. Betty spent four years working in finance at The Arc Montgomery County and then went on to work in corporate accounting. With a desire to return to the nonprofit industry, she was excited to be offered a position with Moveable Feast.

“It’s a blessing to know there are nonprofits such as this to help people who are sick and not able to feed themselves,” she says. “Where I come from, there are no organizations to help people like this.”

Betty was born and raised in Ethiopia and was the first from her family to move overseas. She moved to the U.S. in 2005. “The opportunity presented itself to me, and I took it.” She recalls how difficult the transition was for her to leave everything behind and learn a new language and adjust to a new environment without her family. “It was definitely scary,” Betty says. The challenges here were not the same as we face back home.”

When she was in Ethiopia, she spent a lot of time helping out with her family’s business. This experience led her to study finance in college. After she graduated from George Mason University, she immediately secured the position at The Arc Montgomery County.

With just over a month in her new position, Betty says she feels good knowing her work positively impacts the lives of our clients and helps the community. As a mother of three young children, she doesn’t have a lot of spare time on her hands. She says she enjoys cooking for her family and watching movies when her kids aren’t controlling the tv. She also finds comfort in cleaning and organizing her house and says, “… It clears my head.”
