Many of our crucial and expensive kitchen and delivery equipment will soon reach their life expectancy and will need to be replaced over the next three years. With over 13,500 meals being prepared in our facility each week and 140,000 miles put on our delivery vehicles each year, our ovens, coolers, freezers and refrigerated vans are vital.
New, more e cient equipment will allow us to nearly double the number of meals we prepare and deliver each year.
Smart renovations and better use of space will elevate the quality of our meals, our clients’ satisfaction, and even production efficiency. By transforming our underused grocery room into a prep and baking kitchen, more food will be produced on-site and volunteers will have a larger workspace. Our culinary students will have an innovative area for hands-on learning, including cooking demos and knife and sanitation skills. is will increase their chances of job placement through a high quality kitchen experience.
We will also create a new training and education area for our volunteers. With a core of 3,000 volunteers, they are the heart of Moveable Feast.
Last year, we served 105,078 meals to 137 Eastern Shore residents, often traveling over 140 miles, one-way, from our Baltimore headquarters to make deliveries. We recently opened a temporary Eastern Shore distribution site, however, we need a permanent solution. Opening our own storage and distribution site will enable us to deliver 200,000 meals to 200 people annually and will improve our efficiency and service quality.
Since 2001, our Culinary Apprentice Training Program has provided training and certification to 200 individuals, helping more than 140 graduates secure employment in our community. is program has three goals:
Educate, train and prepare individuals for employment in food services
Assist with the preparation of mission-related meals
Prepare meals which Moveable Feast can sell to partnering organizations to generate revenue to support our programs and services
These meals are a real-world application for our students and a dependable revenue source for Moveable Feast. We want to grow this program by educating a greater number of students and provide improved job training and career guidance. is initiative will help more of our neighbors obtain employment while helping us generate additional income.
